In chapter 1, Alex sends the last form of communication to Wayne Westerberg on April 27,1992. First, Alex is picked up by Jim Gallien who is caught of gaurd by his appearence and what is in his pack. The two engage in a lenghty conversation and Jim first thinks that he is a Jack London fantasy follower, but comes to find sense in Alex's ideals and his future mission. Gallien renletlessly tried to dissuade Alex but he wouldnt budge. Alex's transcedentalism can be seen when he believes that the gov't doesnt need to know how he feeds himself. Alex began his trip on April 28,1992. Later in chapter 2, we are told the reasoning of why the bus was left where it was and what it was for. It was commom that six to seven months would pass without a person passing the but. But six people come across it on September 1992. The region were the bus was located was lifeless but little did Alex know that there was an anomaly of game moving in. Three hunters stumble on the bus and fidn a couple standing about 50 feet from the bus. They tell the three hunters about a bad stench coming from the bus and shortly after the three hunters examine the bus. One of the hunters finds a sleeping bag that was holding the decaying body of Alex. Along with finding the body they found an S.O.S note that Alex had wrote, and his diary. Alex's body was removed the next day and taking for an autopsy. In chapter 3, we hear a mans tale of his encounter is Alex. His name is Wayne Westerberg. He recals his times at the bar and how he provided work and shelter for Alex. McCandless fell in love with Carthage due in part to their community stasis,plebian virtues, and unassuming mien. McCandless was forced to leave as Westerberg was jailed for illegally providing satelite television for free. alex would keep in touch and sent him a book called Peace and War where he highlighted certain sections that he thought Wayne needed to read. Chris sends his final transcript to his parents and thats the last they hear from him. In chapter 4, we learn about his many adventures all throughout America and various jobs the took. We also find out that he ditches and car and many of his belongings. Alex attempts to reach the ocean by boating down the Colarado River but ends up in a maze of irragtaion channels. He crpsses into the Mexico border but on his attempt to enter back he is picked up by the border control.
